Ranks are grouped into three broad paths in most armies: enlisted personnel, warrant officers, and commissioned officers. A Private is an entry‑level rank assigned to enlisted soldiers who perform the fundamental duties under supervision. It is not a commissioned position, so the person does not hold a commission, and it is not a warrant officer role, which requires a special warrant for technical leadership. It is also not an NCO, since NCOs are enlisted leaders like corporals and sergeants who supervise others, whereas a Private is typically at the bottom of the enlisted ladder with no supervisory responsibilities. So, the Private belongs to the enlisted soldiers category.
